West Ham United are growing more confident of signing Chelsea star Ruben Loftus-Cheek, according to reports.
Loftus-Cheek was once described as an “unstoppable force” by Owen Hargreaves, but he has struggled to get regular game time of late.
His loan spell at Crystal Palace in 2017/18 was his gateway to earn a place in the Chelsea team.
He was in superb form for Palace that season, and he was subsequently named in England’s squad for the 2018 World Cup.
Loftus-Cheek became a starter for Chelsea during the 2018/19 season. He carried on right where he left off with Palace, as he enjoyed a really successful campaign.
He featured in 40 games in all competitions, scoring ten goals and notching five assists. He helped Chelsea to finish 3rd in the Premier League and win the UEFA Europa League.
But the midfielder struggled with injuries next season, falling out of favour with new boss Frank Lampard. He only played in nine games in all competitions in 2019/20.
Chelsea have been busy adding to their squad this window. They have signed multiple attacking players, including Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner and Kai Havertz. This has pushed Loftus-Cheek further down the pecking order.
Chelsea have already allowed Ross Barkley to join Aston Villa on loan. Lampard is also willing to let Loftus-Cheek leave the club on a short-term deal this summer.
A number of Premier League clubs have been interested, but West Ham believes they are favourites to sign him.
The Mirror have reported that the Hammers are confident that they are able to sign him before the loan window shuts.
Loftus-Cheek would be a valuable signing for West Ham, and they will hope he can replicate his form at Palace from a couple of years ago.
The midfielder would be David Moyes’ third signing of the summer. They have signed Slavia Prague’s Tomas Soucek for around £15m after he spent last season on loan at the London Stadium.
They have also signed Slavia Prague right-back, Vladimir Coufal, in a deal that is worth around £5m.
