Ian Wright speaks about Man Utd

Arsenal legend Ian Wright claims Man Utd should use Anthony Martial as a makeweight in a £60m deal to sign Tottenham striker Harry Kane.

The Red Devils have only made one signing so far in the January transfer market after spending heavily in the summer on new players to help Erik ten Hag.

After Cristiano Ronaldo left the club by mutual agreement in November, Man Utd secured the loan signing of Burnley striker Wout Weghorst this month with reports indicating Ten Hag will only have the funds available for temporary signings before the end of the window.

Weghorst is seen as a stop-gap until the end of the campaign when Man Utd can step up their pursuit of a top-level striker.

Tottenham’s Kane and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen are two names which keep coming up and Wright reckons the England international is the man they need.

Former Arsenal striker Wright insists that Tottenham should take a deal of £60m plus Anthony Martial for Kane – who has less than 16 months remaining on his contract in north London –  in the summer.

“If Man United came now, Harry Kane with a year left, let’s say they put £60m on the table and we’ll throw in someone – [Anthony] Martial, whatever – it’s a very good deal,” the Arsenal legend told his Wrighty’s House podcast.

“If Man United have got any serious thinking about what we need to do next, it’s a No.9. It seems like a no-brainer that Harry Kane is the person. He takes them somewhere else.”

Arsenal beat Man Utd 3-2 in the Premier League at the weekend and Wright thinks the Red Devils’ lack of a number nine impacted them.

Wright added: “One of the main differences was Eddie Nketiah, a No 9. That’s what Man United didn’t have because they had Weghorst up there but he wasn’t a threat.

“If we’re going to be totally honest, he was not a threat. When you’re looking at Man United’s trajectory at the minute and where they’re moving, Harry Kane for three years. I think Man United would definitely be doing something. Because Man United are not a million miles away with what Ten Hag’s doing.”

One forward who has been brilliant for Man Utd this season is Marcus Rashford and he took his tally to ten goals in ten matches in all competitions since the World Cup break when he scored in United’s 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in their League Cup semi-final first leg.

On Rashford, Ten Hag said: “There are more players who are playing really well but I am happy with Marcus’ performance and his development.

“From the start of the season he is growing and he keeps doing that and what we have to aim for with him, and he is responsible for that, is to keep this process going.

“If he is in this mood, this spirit, he is unstoppable and it’s about the team to get him in the right positions.

“Also, possession, we have a plan but finally is also the intuition, the creativity of an individual like Rashy is to create chances.”
