Wright pinpoints Newcastle star ‘out of his depth’ in Spurs loss

Ian Wright claims Emil Krafth was “out of his depth” as Newcastle lost 3-1 to Tottenham on Wednesday.

Steve Bruce’s side were punished for individual mistakes as a goal from Son Heung-Min and a brace from Harry Kane meant Matt Ritchie’s equaliser counted for nothing.

Injuries to the likes of Jamaal Lascelles and Isaac Hayden led Steve Bruce to change his formation, as Newcastle lined up with a back five.

DeAndre Yedlin and Ritchie occupied the wing-back roles and given further injuries to centre-halves Ciaran Clark, Florian Lejeune and Paul Dummett, Bruce asked right-back, Krafth, to play as a right-sided centre-half.

It’s not a natural position for Krafth and Wright felt he looked uncomfortable, particularly as Kane headed past Martin Dubravka to put Spurs 2-1 in front.

“You have to say it’s disappointing from Newcastle because of the mistakes that they made but Tottenham were very ruthless,” Wright told Match of the Day.

“Krafth, it didn’t really go well for him. Yedlin, he needs to get tighter and he makes it far too easy.

“I thought Krafth was way too out of his depth there, playing in that position. Steve Bruce, with the players that he’s got and how it’s going, they’re doing the best that they could but the mistakes cost them.”
