‘I can’t say too much’ – Wright teases Arsenal fans about signings as he ‘knows players are waiting’

Ian Wright has suggested that he “knows” players are “waiting” for Arsenal to qualify for the Champions League before joining them next year.

The Gunners spent around £120m in the summer to bolster their squad after they narrowly missed out on the top-four last season.

Gabriel Jesus, Oleksandr Zinchenko and Fabio Vieira have been vital additions, and William Saliba’s return after his loan at Marseille has been a major boost.

This has set them up for a brilliant start to the 2022/23 campaign. They have won seven of their first eight games in the Premier League.

The Londoners did not sign everyone they wanted in the summer, though. They were also keen to sign a centre-midfielder and a winger.

Douglas Luiz was a target late in the window, but Aston Villa rejected multiple bids. His deal expires next year so that is something Arsenal can revisit either in January or next summer.

As for wingers, Arsenal are being linked with in-form Shakhtar Donetsk star Mykhaylo Mudryk.

And if Wright is to be believed, more excitement is on the horizon for Arsenal fans if they qualify for the Champions League:

“Whatever happens off the back of this season if Arsenal do get in the top four with the players that I know that are probably waiting…”

Presenter Kelly Cates then interrupted him to ask: Oh hello, who?”

Wright sheepishly replied: “No, no, no. I can’t say anything.

“Waiting for Arsenal to get in the Champions League, this season will be a massive learning curve for this team.

“That’s the least we can get out of it.”

A discouraged Cates then added: “Cannot believe you’ve only given us crumbs.”

Wright would then insist while laughing: “I can’t say too much, it’s only eight games.”

Cates finished by saying: “It’s only eight games but there are players waiting to come if Arsenal finish in the Champions League…”

The Gunners beat Tottenham last weekend and they have another tough test on Sunday as they face Liverpool.

Wright thinks Arsenal “have got to go and beat Liverpool if they are serious”:

“What I saw of Liverpool is this is the time to play them. So Arsenal, with the belief, everyone is buzzing, no injuries at the moment, this is the type of game where, at home, they’ve got to go and beat Liverpool if we’re serious about trying to get where we want to be which is the top four and pushing Man City as much as you can.

“I read the other day, which is the main thing and really interesting, a team with this many points at this stage of the season have always made top four.

“Arsenal are trying to make top four and that for me is the focus.”
