Ian Wright speaks about Man Utd

Ian Wright has tipped Man Utd winger Jadon Sancho to go to another level next season and he “can only see good things happening” at Old Trafford.

The England international has struggled since his £73m move from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 with Sancho failing to match the goal contributions he was providing at the Bundesliga side.

Sancho has slightly improved on last season’s tally with six goals and three assists in the Premier League for Man Utd but he is still a long way off what was expected when he joined.

His last two performances in wins over Chelsea and Fulham have given fans hope that he will take his game to another level under Erik ten Hag next term, with Sancho contributing a goal and an assist.

And Arsenal legend Wright reckons Sancho will show his best form for Man Utd next season, he said on Match of the Day: “Erik ten Hag knows the potential Jadon Sancho has. He recognised that he needed a little bit of a break and sent him to Holland for a bit of physical and mental recuperation earlier in the season.

“But we know the capability of this guy and know what he’s capable of in respects of his ability and skills.

“Once he has that main focal point like he had at Dortmund with [Marco] Reus and people like that, he will do his stuff because we’re talking about somebody who, ability-wise, is absolutely top drawer.

“He’s got six goals and three assists this season and I’m sure United want more from him after how much he cost, but I feel he’s starting to settle and you can feel that United will make more signings and he’ll have a lot more players to play off and I’m sure we’ll see a lot more from Jadon Sancho.

“It’s brilliant, I’m delighted for him. I’m delighted for Erik ten Hag too. It’s been a great season for Manchester United and you can only see good things happening there. What they do this summer is going to be really interesting.”

Man Utd star Maguire

There have been rumours that Harry Maguire could leave Man Utd in the summer transfer window with the captain reduced to being a squad player this season.

And he hinted at his frustration following their 2-1 victory over Fulham on Sunday in which Maguire started for Ten Hag’s side.

Maguire said: “The season is not finished yet, but up to now, it’s been a positive season from where we were and I must say we’re making progress. It’s been a big improvement and it’s a step in the right direction.

“Securing Champions League football, it’s a brilliant season in the Premier League, especially at Old Trafford. It’s been an amazing season at Old Trafford and obviously, our away form is something we’ve got to improve on.

“If we do so, we’ll progress again next season. We’ve made giant steps and I think that’s important. We’ve worked on the philosophy the manager is trying to bring in and I think of course, over pre-season, we’ll work again and push ourselves.

“We’ll set high demands and we’ve got to look at this season and what we’ve done. For me, I think it’s been great from the boys and there have been lots of individual, amazing performances but it’s not done yet.

“Yeah of course [asking if he would like to start more]. Listen, we have a lot of competition for places and that’s what a big club needs. Lots of strength in depth. I think you’ve seen today, after 20 minutes, it was a really positive performance.

“[We had] lads who stepped in, lads who haven’t played as much and I think the manager and his staff can rely upon us and know that, if he makes changes, we can do the job, so it’s good to be part of this squad.

“I think if we’re going to be successful this season and next season and the season after, we’re going to need a big squad.”
