Xhaka has had his fair share of struggles at the Emirates this season, including being booed off by his own fans after he told them to ‘f*** off’ in their 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace back in November.
The Gunners forked out around £30 million for the Swiss star in 2016 but despite being named captain by Unai Emery in the summer, the Arsenal fans have become frustrated with Xhaka, causing speculation about his future with the London club.
It seemed as if Xhaka had secured a loan move to Hertha Berlin earlier this month but with Mikel Arteta adamant that he’ll stay until at least the summer, he has been reinstated into the Arsenal line-up.
In a recent interview though, Murphy revealed that he believes Xhaka could have reached his full potential if he’d made a move to Anfield instead of the Emirates.
“If Xhaka was in Liverpool’s side with Henderson and Fabinho, he would look a hell of a player because he is technically good, a good passer, has a great shot on him and he has the ability with his great left foot to open you up,” Murphy told talkSPORT.
“But when you are playing in a team that is struggling a bit, he is a passenger defensively and a liability. It is a dilemma for Mikel Arteta because he has a squad that needs a bit of tinkering.”
Arsenal travel to Palace on Saturday and Xhaka will be hoping for a better experience than their previous meeting this season.
Arteta has shown increased faith in the Swiss midfielder since his appointment as manager with him even hinting that Xhaka could reclaim the armband in the future.
For now though, the Spaniard will be focused on winning back to back league games for the first time since the opening two games of the season, in August.
