Granit Xhaka would love to become Arsenal captain and has denied he wants to move away from the club this summer.

The 26-year-old joined the Gunners in a £35million transfer from Borussia Monchengladbach in the summer of 2016 but has proved a divisive figure among supporters, who all haven’t taken to his style.

Nonetheless, Xhaka remains a trusted member of Unai Emery’s side with the midfielder at times furnished with the captain’s armband and, at the very least, a regular starter under the Spaniard.

Recent reports in Italy have claimed that Inter Milan could be interested in taking him to Serie A in the transfer window but Xhaka says he is happy at Arsenal.

“‘Not that I know,” Xhaka told Swiss newspaper Blick when asked if he would be leaving Arsenal this summer.

“I have another four years on my contract, I only signed last year.

“I’m happy there, my family too. That’s the most important thing.”

Petr Cech and Aaron Ramsey, who have both left the club, were Emery’s first two picks for captain last season with Xhaka taking the armband if neither of them played.

On the possibility of being Emery’s first pick next season, Xhaka added: “It would certainly be the dot on the i.”
