Xherdan Shaqiri claims he “decided to stay with Liverpool” after the transfer deadline passed without the Swiss winger leaving Anfield.

Liverpool had hoped to offload Shaqiri, who has been limited to just 82 minutes of action since January 11 – 75 minutes of which came in the Carabao Cup at Lincoln – because of injury, in the recent transfer window but interest from a couple of Italian clubs failed to materialise into an acceptable bid.

Back in August there were strong links to Lazio as reports claimed Klopp was looking to sell Shaqiri ‘at an affordable price’ with Liverpool presenting the Serie A side with a ‘market opportunity’.

The 28-year-old had travelled to Switzerland for a friendly against Croatia, and Nations League games against Spain and Germany, but will now not be involved as he is self-isolating after testing positive for coronavirus.

On international duty, Shaqiri told Thuner Tagblatt (via Sport Witness): “The media write a lot, but in the end I’m with Liverpool.

“I have a long-term contract, and I really feel good. I have decided to stay with Liverpool. In football, there is always speculation.

“I think the national team comes at a good time to be able to play again and then attack again when I go back to Liverpool.”
