Neville says Carrick sack won’t help Man Utd while ownership ‘haven’t got a clue’
Gary Neville feels a change in management won’t help Manchester United, where the ownership “haven’t got a clue” with multiple board members out of their depth.
Carrick has been massively under threat of late. After United lost 3-0 to Bournemouth in the Premier League three games ago, there were conversations around his position.
He was given a few games to see if he could turn things around, and after one loss and United going a couple of goals down in the next two games, he’s picked up a win and a draw.
But failing to beat Aston Villa in the Premier League means the Red Devils are in the Premier League relegation places, and therefore pressure will remain.
But United legend Neville, speaking on NBC, has stated nothing is going to change if it’s only the manager who goes.
He said: “Michael Carrick did that last season [turned things around for a short time]. You can paper over the cracks and you can a new manager bounce where a new manager comes in, everyone’s happy for a couple of months and then all of a sudden, six months later it happens again.
“You can keep changing the manager and thinking that’s going to be the answer, but the reality is this has been proven over eight managers in 12 years, that’s not the answer.
“So Michael could leave, Michael might stay, we don’t know, the ownership haven’t got a clue what to do. They haven’t got a clue what to do. It’s rinse and repeat, isn’t it?
“We’ve seen what’s happened. [Ruben] Amorim, [Erik] ten Hag, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Michael Carrick’s in the job now, Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal, David Moyes, Ralf Rangnick, there’s eight I’ve just named, some of them are world-class managers who’ve had great reputations, success.
“There are a lot of promising young managers there, there are a lot of ex-players who know the club in there as well, who’ve come in and tried to instil the club’s values and align with the fanbase.”
Gary Neville hits out at Man Utd board
Neville feels there is an issue in that many members of the board are out of their depth.
He added: “None of it has worked, because if you recruit badly, if you’ve got a poor performance department, you’ve got a poor recruitment department, you’ve not got leadership that’s strong right through the spine of the football club, you will fail.
“Every single organisation in the world will fail if you’ve not got an aligned leadership from top to bottom and that’s from your board at the very top and your ownership, right the way through to the person who is basically stood on that football pitch trying to play football.
“It’s a massive issue, there are real issues within that football club, you’ve got people doing jobs who have never done those jobs before in senior positions.
