Jamie Carragher has urged Liverpool to “become more like Chelsea” and take cup competitions more seriously.

Jurgen Klopp has won just two trophies since taking charge of the Reds in 2015, albeit the best two trophies available: the Premier League and the Champions league.

For a manager of his calibre and with the players at his disposal, though, it is a surprise he hasn’t racked up more silverware.

Klopp has been known to look down on domestic tournaments such as the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup but Carragher thinks the German needs to adopt the Chelsea mentality and hoover up as many trophies as possible.

The Sky Sports pundit said in his column for The Telegraph: “Jurgen Klopp is heading towards his seventh year as Liverpool manager amid a sobering reality. His team have not won enough.

“Out of context, that sounds extremely unfair. A better way of putting it is that they have not won as much as their performances have deserved.

“To put it simply, Liverpool need to become more like Chelsea.

“In the past eleven seasons, Chelsea have won the Premier League twice.

“A good return, but a reflection of how the balance of power changed after the City Abu Dhabi takeover. In the previous six years, Chelsea were Premier League champions three times.

“What they have done so well during the Roman Abramovich era is to become serial trophy collectors. That is an area where Liverpool can and must improve.

“Since winning the FA Cup in 2006, Liverpool have won only one domestic cup competition: the 2012 League Cup. That’s a poor return for a club of such stature.

“There is a broader lesson to learn, for Liverpool especially, when the margin for error in a title bid is so small.

“The club have to maximise their chances of winning all four competitions they enter every season, recognising the League Cup and the FA Cup as worthy prizes.”

Liverpool are nine points behind league leaders Manchester City but are yet to be knocked out of the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Champions League.
