Rio Ferdinand has reacted to claims that Liverpool are “on their knees” after a couple of losses, as he describe one summer signing as doing “alright.”

The Reds were flying high after five games in the Premier League. They had won every game and had a good lead on their rivals in the title race.

But Arsenal kept pace, and after a slip up from Liverpool, they’ve taken top spot. Indeed, the Reds had their unbeaten streak ruined by Crystal Palace, before then losing 2-1 to Chelsea, either side of a shock Champions League loss to Galatasaray.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have lost just one game in the league this term, and have scored the second-most goals in the Premier League – a tally bettered only by Manchester City.

Their top scorer, Viktor Gyokeres, is on three goals, and Ferdinand feels while he could be doing better, he’ll not be worried as he’s playing for the league leaders, so can’t be questioned, as he feels Liverpool shouldn’t, either.

The Manchester United legend said on Rio Ferdinand Presents: “He’s [Gyokeres] doing alright.

“You’re top of the league, everything’s rosy when you’re top of the league. People don’t get questioned much, when Liverpool were top of the league and hadn’t lost a game, was anyone questioning Liverpool?

“They lost a couple of games and everyone’s saying they’re on their knees and might be out the title race – it’s mad. He’s doing alright, he’s not pulling up trees or creating magic but he’s in a team that’s top of the league so I’m sure he’s happy.”

It would be unfair to criticise Gyokeres, given he is the top scorer in one of the highest-scoring sides in the league, in which the goals have been shard around, with Jurrien Timber, Bukayo Saka and Martin Zubimendi just below him on two goals.

That suggests not all of the chances are solely coming his way. In terms of the shooting stats in the Premier League so far this season, the Swede has taken 14.

Eberechi Eze has taken 11 and Timber nine. But Gyokeres’ rate of shots on target might be something of a concern, as of the 14 he has taken, only four have hit the target.

He has scored three of those, so if he can find the target more often, he should score more goals.
